You may be asking why I’ve included a section for English for parents on this website given that this is an English for jobs website. But let’s think about this – being a parent of young children and school age children is the biggest job there is! There is no other job more important. And because of that, I want to include resources to help with this job also.
As a public school teacher working with immigrant and second language families in the United States for more than 24 years AND a parent of two school-aged children, I am very familiar with the typical types of English communication that causes problems between the families and the schools.
In this free English course for parents of school children, I have included 11 topics that tend to give the most difficulty between school and home. My hope is that you will take the time to study this vocabulary and practice it so that you will feel comfortable using it when the time comes. And believe me – the time WILL come!
Across the United States, school policy differs state to state and district to district. However, these 11 areas I focus on in this course include general vocabulary and phrases that should be applicable for most any school in the U.S.

This is a free online course – completely free. There are no tricks or attempts to get you to pay for anything extra. There are not many resources this in-depth offered for free on the internet. For years, I have seen my students’ parents struggle with school interactions. I wanted to do something to help with that – not only for the parents at my own school but for parents all over the U.S.
I put a lot of work into this course, and I hope you will use it and appreciate how much more confident you feel in working alongside your child’s school!

Tips for Using My Free English Course for Parents of School Children
- Practice every day – 10 to 15 minutes a day
- Do not rush. Take your time through each section – using as many days per section as you need to feel like you truly know the 60 words/phrases per section.
- Practice orally. Practice speaking aloud – to a family member, a friend, or to yourself in a mirror. The speaking and listening skills are the most important skill for you at this level.
- Share this course with other friends and family who have school-aged children so you can practice together!
